"That's 'Service Games', Sonny...": A Brief History of Companies and Their Names: Part 1
So you know what this article is about... |
What's in a name? When purchasing a console many consumers bank off the reputation found lurking behind a console developers name. From fanboys to first time purchasers, the name behind the console is a big factor. Do you stick with one of the oldest in the industry and risk a lack of third-party support at the end of the consoles lifespan? Go with the US-based company's system, that has killer shooters and action games, but lacks heavy support from some of the major Japanese developers? Or choose to support the former industry dominator, knowing they will have killer exclusives thanks to support from major developers, yet lack some of the quirky, charming, independently developed games? The choice is hard, and rarely do gamers have enough money to buy every console on the market and the games to go with them.

Assassin's Creed III Will Be Out In Less Than A Year
Assassin's Creed III will be released on October 30, 2012!! It won't even have been a year by the time this game is released, from when AC:Revelations was released in November of 2011. Today, Ubisoft boss Yves Guillemot says the game will be "the biggest launch in Ubisoft history." He said the game has been in development for three years.
The Assassin's Creed games are among some of my absolute favorite titles to play on a regular basis. My only complaint is that Ubisoft has really taken this engine as far as they can, and I hope that AC:III comes with a new engine, or significant improvements upon the current engine so that it feels newer. I for one and completely psyched out of my mind for this game, and can't wait to step into the shoes of a new assassin!!
Until next time, keep on gamin' on!

Binary Domain
I recently discovered the hidden gem that is "Binary Domain". Developed by SEGA, this third person shooter is looking to have a lot of promise! The demo for BD will be released on the PSN on February 14, 2012, and on Xbox Live on February 15, 2012. I for one will not be missing out on this opportunity to expand my gaming library. I wasn't planning on buying any games until "Ghost Recon: Future Soldier", and "Max Payne 3", but now I'm thinking otherwise. After watching this awesome trailer for the multiplayer, I couldn't help but giggle about the unique twist it's putting into third person shooters.

Glitches, Crashes, and Bugs. Oh My!
RUN YOU FOOL!! It will destroy us all!! |
There is nothing worse than playing a game you love only to have it crash, glitch out, or become otherwise unplayable; yet it happens all the time. From major corporations to single-man dev teams, it seems like every modern major release has some sort of bug, big or small. With game consoles going online in the last generation, and hard drives/internal memory becoming a standard feature, many of the major problems can now be "patched" in order to fix them; that, however, seems to be a bit of a double edged sword. As developers, both large and small, have gained the ability to fix their work post-release, it also feels like there has been a rise in the amount of errors slipping past QA/QC (quality assurance/control). Where gamers once expected a console title would be completed and perfected upon release, many now wonder what patches will be needed before a title is even playable. While patching for playability has plagued PC games for years, it seems console games are quickly making up for lost time in the "patching arena." In fact bug reporting and QA has become so talked about among hardcore gamers that there is even a popular webcomic about testing games in the industry (warning: very adult language).

Ubisoft and Tom Clancy Games
The first design of Conviction had me worried with Sam Fisher sporting the "bum" look. Ugly long hair too... |
When “Tom Clancy’s: Splinter Cell - Conviction” was announced in 2006, I was overwhelmed with excitement. I have been a massive Splinter Cell fan since the first game was released in 2001. In 2007 “Assassin’s Creed” was released, and became a huge success, thanks in part to its introduction of a new style of stealth gameplay. Not long after the release of “Assassin’s Creed” Ubisoft announced that they were “going back to the drawing board” on ‘Splinter Cell: Conviction." I was crushed. I understood that they wanted to make a game that felt different from another one of their titles, but I was still extremely bummed out about it.
