If you've been playing Halo 4 as much as I have then you know about the Crimson Map Pack that came out last month. If you don’t, or if want a quick analysis on the maps, then I’m here to help you out and talk about the maps in this DLC!
The first of the three I’m going to cover is Wreckage. Wreckage is a medium-to-large scale map equipped with a wide range of cover alongside some nooks and crannies to pop in and out from when you’re getting pinned down by a hailstorm of lead and plasma. What’s amazing about this map is that it’s called “Wreckage”, in most cases means things are wrecked, and look terrible and unattractive, yet Wreckage completely defies that definition with its beauty and amazing backdrops. This map screams out Big Team Battle and other vehicle-based game types, and it certainly manages them well. There are man cannons placed all around the map that can get you from point A to point B very quickly, as well as a lot of space for vehicles, and the insides of various crashed ships for those that want to weave in and out of the crossfire unscathed.
Next we have Harvest, a medium-sized asymmetrical map that takes place on the wonderful and luscious planet of Harvest. This map has a somewhat rectangle-shaped layout, and has two color-coded bases; the red and blue bases. They both have a top and bottom portion of their bunkers and have a reasonable amount of cover. Harvest has a huge hotspot at the center of the map where everything is a little more spaced out with less cover, which can result in intense firefights and a lot of dead bodies. There is one glaring problem with Harvest though, which is one base is bigger than the other. It’s not so bad that one base completely dominates the other, but it certainly has more perks, and although it is an asymmetrical map, that’s something that should have been thought out a little better. Besides that, the map is great. There’s a lot of long and narrow paths for snipers, there are close and tight places for those who prefer more CQB, and it’s all happening on the best looking planet in Halo history!
If you’re having a hard time figuring out which map you like more the magical dwarves over at 343 are already one step ahead of you! Say hello to Shatter, the final map in the Crimson Map Pack. Shatter is a large-scale, symmetrical map, that is very vehicle friendly. It combines the beauty of Wreckage with the very modern looking structures of Harvest. This is the biggest map included in the DLC, and certainly the most fun. There are a lot of points on the map that will spark your interest and the overall layout of the map is well-balanced and very fun to run about with its winding caves, and well placed vehicles. Not to mention the thrilling scenery in the background is amazing and it sets the mood for the map very nicely.
All in all this DLC is a solid 4 out of 5 and is definitely worth the 800 Microsoft Points (10 Dollars) especially if you're a die-hard Halo fan! And if you're feeling very merry, you could get this as a belated Xmas gift for a fellow Halo enthusiast! Hope everybody had as much of a gnarly Xmas as I did, and I can't wait to see what 343 has to offer in the New Year!
