In 1988 football games, and quite possibly all sports games, were revolutionized. At the time it was known as John Madden Football, and was the most realistic football game to be released. In 1990 an updated version of John Madden Football was released, and in 1993 EA changed the name to Madden NFL after aquiring the rights for the game. Since then, there has been a Madden NFL annually. Releasing a game annually can be very beneficial to a company, but it can also be a bad thing.
My issue is that it's the same game, different year. Even though there are several updates to the newer game, it's still running on the same engine, and the improvements aren't enough to make me want to spend $60.00 every year. Why not create a newer, better game, and release it every two years like any normal sequel? During the time the new game is being worked on would be a perfect time to make some money on the side and create updates to the game, or sell downloadable content.
I know a lot of people that have stopped buying Madden NFL and started buying NCAA Football because it seems like that particular studio of EA's puts more effort into NCAA Football each year that it's released. I don't doubt that the Madden series is known for A) making money, and B) having more realistic physics and gameplay than any other sport's title out there, but do we really have to buy a brand new game every year with changes that don't really matter?
It's becoming a problem, and needs to be stopped. The changes that are included on a new Madden NFL title aren't big enough to cost $60.00 a year. They are definitely worthy of a ten to twenty dollar DLC though! These are just my thoughts. What are yours?
-Until next time, keep on gamin' on!
