Introducing Matt: News Correspondent and Editorial Contributor

First I would like to thank Mike and Ryan for the opportunity to be part of this blog. I am thrilled about being a part of the Gaming Cuisine team.

So let me get down to introducing myself and how I came to be a gamer. My name is Matt Taney and I was born in Utah, but was raised in California. During my service in the U.S. Navy I lived in a few places around this great country including Mississippi, Illinois, and Washington DC.

My start with video games was way back with the Atari 2600. Although I was too young to really appreciate games as I do now, I do look back at playing games such as Asteroids and Missile Command with fondness. It wasn’t until later, when my friend Mike Grapes introduced me to the Nintendo Entertainment System (NES), and the Christmas of that year I received my first game system, that is really when I started down the path of being a gamer.

Now no one can talk about the NES without talking about Super Mario Bros., and how could you not? There you were a plumber trying to save a princess in the Mushroom Kingdom... epic! Another game that is often talked about, The Legend of Zelda would be up there for me as one of my all time favorites; I have many good memories of playing that game with my brother, and father. But one game that I really enjoyed and would still play is Castlevania. I can still remember the upbeat music playing while I climbed the castle to get to Dracula.

Of course once the Super Nintendo (SNES) hit the streets I upgraded to the new system. There were so many incredible games on this system that it’s hard to limit any to my favorites, but Final Fantasy IV was the game for me on the SNES. I was really caught up in the story of Cecil finding redemption, and got a little choked up when Cid sacrificed himself to save everyone on the airship (at least at the time I thought he had).

Through the years I have played or owned a number of games systems such as the Sega Genesis, Turbo Grafx-16, Neo Geo, Dreamcast and N64, etc. But I didn’t limit myself to just playing games at home. My friends and I would go to Scandia and play games such as Street Fighter II and Mortal Kombat, trying to best each other; those were good times.

These days I can be found on my Xbox 360 gaming it up on Battlefield 3 with my brothers, or enjoying an RPG like Dragon Age and the Mass Effect trilogy. Or, to a lesser extent, on my PS3 playing DC Universe Online or enjoying InFamous and InFamous 2.

As you can see I really enjoy gaming. The fact that gaming has started to become mainstream is awesome. Games like Mass Effect 3 showcase how the video game industry has stepped up to the plate and is showing the world that games are here to stay. We are no longer sitting in dark rooms playing games by ourselves, we are part of a growing community and culture of gamers.

I look forward to being part of this blog and keeping people up to date on video game news on the Daily Specials page, so check it out!

Until next time, gamers of the world unite!
