Xbox 720 Coming Holiday 2013

This concept image can only mean one thing.... The next Xbox is going to be an interactive spaceship!!!
Well, it's official. The Xbox 720 will have Blu-ray, two GPUs (Basically two computers working together), four to six cores, and will require an always-on-Internet connection as an anti piracy measure. VG247 has all of the details, but I must say that I am pretty excited! One thing that has me concerned is that the 720 will have to be connected to the Internet to function, which leads me to believe the rumors of the console not having a disc drive are true. This could mean that it would not be backward compatible with the 360.

I can see this being an issue for a lot of gamers out there, but one point that I would like to bring up is that I'm sure that there will still be an Xbox Live Marketplace where we can buy the digital copy of the older games if we want. For those of us that wait for the price of the game to drop, or to go buy a used copy wouldn't have to worry a whole lot because of the ability to download a cheaper digital copy anyway. It's all of the games we have collected that we want to play on one system that is the problem. In this case, I guess we'll just have to hang on to our 360's to play our old games. But is this practice so new?

When the Super Nintendo was released, it came with new games, and couldn't play the NES games. When the Nintendo 64 released, it also came with new games, and a new cartridge system where SNES games were not compatible. Then the Nintendo GC introduced the mini-disc to the market. This also meant more new games, and no more old games. It was natural for a person to keep all of his old systems to play the old games when needed. It was only recently that we were able to play our old system's games on the new one.

So it's good, but it's also bad. I can see a lot of places such as Gamestop losing a lot more business due to a decision like this. They make a big portion of their money buying used games, and re-selling them for people to buy at a cheaper price. Not being able to play our old games on the new system would make it so they couldn't do that anymore because people are buying all new, and digital copies. Regardless, I am excited for a new generation of consoles, and look forward to more details on the Xbox 720, and PS4!

Until next time, keep on gamin' on!

  1. My guess that slit in the front is either where discs go in or aliens come out.

  2. It has a blueray player. AKA a disc drive. Why would it have a blueray player in it and not have a disc drive. This seems like a very dumb logic

  4. Blu-Ray and standard lasers are not necessarily the same thing; IE Blu-Ray capability does not mean DVD capability. For a Blu-Ray player to read standard DVD's, it has to have a second lens built in. Literally it has to have a standard DVD laser lens built in directly next to the Blu-Ray lens for the player to read a standard DVD disc. In this case it's possible that this will be a Blu-ray only player, in order to act as a piracy prevention measure, therefore making it incompatible with Xbox 360 games.
