Star Wars: Battlefront meets Battlefield 3?

LucasArts has brought the videogame world and its huge Star Wars following some pretty incredible games, including the upcoming Star Wars: 1313. One of my absolute favorite adventure games from the world of SW is The Force Unleashed. It gives the player an amazing opportunity to feel what it would be like to have the force that a Jedi has, and from the dark side at that. The way the game ran, the story, the graphics, music, control, and several other things is what made this game good. One of the most fun SW games I have played would have to be Star Wars: Battlefront, and for some of the same reasons that made TFU excellent.

For those of you who don’t know what Battlefront is all about, here’s a quick rundown. While there is a story, and it does actually tie into SW: Episode III (even though it hadn’t been released at the time), the highlight of Battlefront is the battles. Several gametype variations are available to the player, most of which are conquest modes. Player objectives include such things as eliminating every opposing player, or capturing several command posts simultaneously for 20 seconds.

Being a first and third person shooter, the game has a lot of variation to keep the player entertained such as the option to man over 25 vehicles from the Star Wars universe like the massive AT-AT, all the way down to the Speeder Bike. The player is able to battle against the computer, play with a friend on split-screen, or play online against up to 32 people across the globe on PS2, PC and Xbox. While you cannot play online through Xbox Live, or the PSN anymore, due to Microsoft and Sony shutting down the original servers, this game is still highly addictive against the non player character's.

LucasArts released two Battlefront games, and they were both very successful. Eventually there were rumors that a third installment would be released, and then rumors later that the project had been cancelled. No official announcement have been made.

Here’s where my idea for a third installment comes in. First, can you picture playing a first and third person shooter in the Star Wars universe today? Battlefront II was released in 2005, and graphics, gameplay mechanics, and engines that run the monster games we play today are leaps and bounds ahead of what was being released in 2005. I would like to see Battlefront III with todays, or even the next generation of gaming’s standards. Have you played Battlefield 3? There are several vehicles to choose from, weapon customization, multiple skins for weapons, different camouflage for a character to run around in, incredibly accurate destruction physics, and some of the best graphics I have seen to date are in this game. Now switch the modern war, vehicles, and guns and replace it with the what lies in a galaxy far, far away.

I can picture myself picking from a list of clone troopers, droids, or bounty hunters, then from classes, and since my specialty is sniping, I’d pick a recon class. I’d make sure my sniper rifle or blaster were up to the specifications that I desire, and jump into the game. As a scout sniper, I would immediately go for the speeder bike. As I whiz through the battlefield several explosions detonate around me, teammates and opposing players getting into gun fights, tanks blasting each other and the environment around them, hovercrafts rushing in to support their respective teams, and I fly past it all to get to higher ground. As I pick my spot carefully, laying down to get a clear shot of the battlefield, I see the foreground of Tatooine. I zoom in and take several players out, and am quickly noticed by the opposing team. To avoid my demise I hop on my speeder bike and try for another location. I find myself in the enemy’s territory, and decide to highjack a droid tank. The rumble of the engine starting and continuous tremble from the tank hovering over the battlefield shake my actual being. Yes, I’m wearing Turtlebeach headphones, and have the bass boost all the way up. Of course it’s going to physically shake my body! Graciously flowing into the heat of the fight, a fellow player spawns in the tank with me, and begins to take opposing forces out with the high pitched blaster turret. While he does this, I rip through other tanks, and buildings with the powerful cannons that the droid’s tank carries. Our team is under heavy fire as they try to capture an objective, so my newly found teammate and I make our way over to the scene. Laying down support fire we successfully take out all nearby enemy troops, and hop out of the tank to help capture the objective. Eventually we find ourselves pinned down by the oncoming fire of aircraft from above as well as surrounding ground troops. Even though I am inside of a building at this point I can hear our fellow air-speeders and droid aircraft battling it out for a close victory. My teammates and I rush to the next, and final, objective to capture it. As we arrive no one is to be seen. Literally seconds before our victory, two opposing players zoom into the scene on speeder bikes, and begin laying down heavy fire in our direction. A couple of well placed grenades damper their fire, and take out one of them in the process. As I zoom in to take the final kill my teammate has already snuck up behind the droid and rips off its head in one seamless motion. The final seconds count down as we capture the final objective, and the game is won.

Now doesn’t that sound incredible? I think it does. Eventually, I’d like to see an up to date Battlefront title, and I believe it could be just as popular as Battlefiled 3, or any other AAA shooter out there, if it is done right. What would your new Battlefront be like?
